Memoirs of a Mucus Mutant

Today I read an interesting article on NPR featuring an analysis of federal spending under President Obama. The analysis, by Rex Nutting (MarketWatch of The Wall Street Journal), showed that spending has increased at a much slower rate under Obama than it has under any other president since Eisenhower in the 50′s. The interesting thing about this is that nearly everyone thinks that Obama has been spending like crazy. It’s almost all you ever hear from Republicans, especially the Tea Partiers. Even Democrats who support the president believe spending has increased dramatically.

NPR highlighted this quote by Will Rogers in describing the situation: ”It isn’t what we don’t know that gives us trouble. It’s what we know that just ain’t so.”

It’s like when someone says, ‘How are you?’ Do you say, ‘Well, my head hurts and I’m lonely and depressed and I’m worried about everything and the world is collapsing and full of evil’? Or do you say, ‘I’m fine’?
